IBHS Research Center
Tour October 2013
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) Research Center is a unique, state-of-the-art, multi-hazard applied research and communications facility in South Carolina, approximately 45 minutes south of the Charlotte Airport. This facility is significantly advancing building science by enabling researchers to more accurately evaluate residential and commercial construction materials and systems using full-scale test specimens, which was never possible before. The Research Center is a tangible, very public demonstration of the property insurance industry’s deep commitment to reducing and preventing losses that disrupt the lives of millions of home and business owners each year.
We had the opportunity to hear about IBHS’ exciting research projects and take a tour of the entire campus, which included:
• Large test chamber
• Observation area and control room
• Hail laboratory – See how researchers create and deploy artificial hailstones to simulate real-world hailstorms
• Conditioning area for test specimens
• Fan # 107 - The 105 fans in the large test chamber (and one spare) can recreate wind events up to 135 mph. Fan #107, located outside the test chamber, is used for small scale testing, and can generate winds up to 175 mph.
