 Message from the President |

The Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the CPCU Society is expecting 2010 – 2011 to be a great year. Our chapter offers monthly lunch meetings, All Industry Day (I-Day) and new designee conferment, a good works project, a technical workshop and a leadership workshop. This year we are planning to add a social event and networking event. We are also hoping to have a Shadow Day with College Students from both Appalachian State University and Eastern Carolina University.
Our chapter has been awarded the Circle of Excellence Gold level again this year. This makes four years in a row we have earned the Gold level. This award is based upon chapter activities & meeting member needs. To consistently earn the highest level is a great achievement. Let’s keep the momentum going and make this year our fifth.
One of the keys to a successful chapter is participation by the members. If you are already active that is great and I hope you can step it up by attending at least one more event than you did last year. If you have not been active for awhile now is the time to recommit. You will get much more out of your membership if you put more into it. And to our new designees & those still working toward their designation I urge you to become active. There is a wealth of knowledge & experience in our chapter. Come and get to know other insurance professionals.
Let’s start the year off right and plan to attend our September lunch meeting on September 16. Also mark your calendars that our All Industry Day or I-Day event will be March 10, 2011. Now is also the time to register for the CPCU Society Annual Meeting & Seminars in Orlando Florida September 25 – 28. This conference is always a wonderful event full of educational seminars, networking and fun.
Looking forward to a great year.
Stacy R Schrader CPCU, AU, AIS

Good Work Project – Spring 2010
By Deane Tolman
Did you know last year volunteers logged 127,851 hours (the equivalent of 61 full-time employees) at the Food Bank of North Carolina? On March 20th, nine of our chapter members spent their Saturday morning attempting to break this record for 2010. Those attending included Pat Adams, Jana Antos, Bob Cyrus, David Braswell, Kim Hannah, Karen Price, Roseanne Kokos, Stacy Schrader, and Deane Tolman.
Not knowing what excitement awaited us on our particular visit, we quickly learned that our assignment was to tackle 10,000+ pounds of recently donated salvage food (consisting of dented cans and packages with compromised labels). Our daunting task was to carefully examine these food items for safety, and then repackage and sort them into one of ten different selected categories. From this, these boxed food stocks will then to be distributed to the Food Banks’ partner agencies (e.g. rescue missions, food pantries, soup kitchens and school programs) within their 34 country network.
As amazing as our accomplishment seemed at the end of our shift, we later learned that the Food Bank receives over 1.3 million pounds of salvage each year alone! Although exhausted and pleased that we had escaped the near-by bagging-potatoes assignment, bestowed to our other fellow volunteers, we left feeling a small sense of accomplishment, albeit a small dent, and that we had made a mark in the life of one of 480,000 individuals (especially children and the elderly) in North Carolina who are at risk of hunger! A special thanks to our Chapter members who did made a difference by volunteering of their time.
